F ratpack comics Jon Heder and Will Ferrell have had some dodgy outings in the past year with, respectively, a terrible School For Scoundrels remake and a piece of sub-Kaufman noodling called Stranger Than Fiction. It's a relief to see them back in this serviceably funny underdog sports movie - the kind of thing that suits them best, or suits Ferrell best, at any rate: big, broad, elaborately detailed comedy characters in the Saturday Night Live tradition. They play egomaniac rivals in the narcissistic world of men's figure skating, an arena of sparkly spandex costumes on the ice and foot-stamping tantrums and seething resentments backstage. Heder is Jimmy MacElroy, an absurdly vain peacock of a skater with a figure-hugging, powder-blue outfit and blowdried blond hair. He has an appallingly affected routine that involves imitating a peacock on the ice and finally releasing a dove, somehow secreted within his skin-tight getup. His hated enemy is Chazz Michael Michaels, played by the permanently sweaty Ferrell: a skater with a James Brown hairdo and a sensual beergut, who insists on his own brash brand of bad-boy heterosexuality. He is proud of the fact that he is the only skater to have won Olympic medals and adult movie awards.
When a much-publicized ice-skating scandal strips them of their gold medals, two world-class athletes skirt their way back onto the ice via a loophole that allows them to compete together as a pairs team. Actor: Amy Poehler, Craig T. Nelson, Jenna Fischer, Jon Heder, Nick Swardson.

Paramount Pictures. I was 12 years old at the time, and there was nothing that could get me in a theater faster than a new Will Ferrell movie. To this day, I have never laughed harder in a movie theater than I did on March 30, I left the theater fully confident that I had seen a comedy classic. I've probably seen 'Blades of Glory' 10 or 15 times since it came out.

At this point, it isn't really an insult to call Will Ferrell's comedies thin, formulaic, and haphazardly constructed, because that's more or less the case every time out. Nothing in the storytelling is all that clever, the camera does only what's necessary to keep the action in frame, and the individual gags don't build on each other as they would in a good farce. In fact, it's really hard to see what the directors of Ferrell comedies do, besides calling "Action! To that end, Blades Of Glory makes for a model Ferrell vehicle, as it tackles the glittery, diva-filled world of figure skating with all the respect the Winter Games' least essential non-sport deserves. Some of the jokes are about skating, others are about whatever random thing happened to pop into Ferrell's head with the cameras rolling, and just about all of it is funny. Ferrell and a feather-haired Jon Heder play rival champions with radically different styles. A former orphan trained relentlessly from an early age, Heder has been groomed into a model of technical, bloodless perfection on ice.
